Along parts of the Antarctic coast, glacial ice flows into bays, where it forms shelves of floating ice hundreds of metres thick. They extend out to sea, but remain attached to land on at least one side. Shelves can remain stable for millions of years. The Ross Ice Shelf is the largest, and covers a similar area to France. The Filchner Ice Shelf is the second largest. — By MrGhaz at 10:57 AM Sun

The Great Frog today announced that they will be reproducing Bruce Dickinson's Eddie belt buckle. With only 2 versions currently in existence, this is a rather big deal for any Iron Maiden fan. The Great Frog, who made the buckle all those years ago, will be remaking 50 exact replica buckles as a one off. So far there is no mention of cost, but don't expect a limited edition solid silver buckle to be cheap. — By TheGreatFrog at 10:51 AM Sun

Everytime I read about the marker pen known by the trademark "Sharpie" I am reminded of the pre-punk teenage movement of the same name. Mindlessly violent and aggressive they were the antithesis of the hippie culture and caused havoc in the suburbs of Melbourne and Sydney. They were the Clockwork Orange fiction made real. — By thequickbrownfox at 10:32 AM Sun

Ignoring the exception -USA - this survey clearly indicates that wealthier people are more likely to be less religious. Sounds strange? May be, but that's what the study has revealed. I was coming home from covering Inochicon where I was recording the Reni Mimura concert on the 570 R5 Landsdale/Doylestown Regional Rail, and a girl got on the train... with a harp. Now I thought the fact that the girl was carrying around the harp was crazy enough and due to the sheer size of the thing. Everyone on the train was openly fascinated with the instrument and the conductor joked that she should play a song, and everyone sort of chimed in and agreed. She eventually relented and played a short set. — By Dan Tabor at 4:59 AM Sun

The peasant girl who heard the voice of God, who roused a spineless prince and a cowed people, and freed her country from the conqueror's yoke: that was Joan of Arc. The entire world knows her story, for Joan is one of world's heroines; but the tale of Joan is one that is always worth the re-telling and here in this gallery of great lives, her example of faith and courage glows afresh in a brilliant setting. — By MrGhaz at 3:51 AM Sun

In Europe, buildings were becoming much more sophisticated. At the height of ancient Greek civilization, between 500 and 400 BC, the Greeks were using blocks of marble or limestone for their temples and public buildings. Some stones were cut so accurately that they fitted together perfectly, but the Greeks also used iron or bronze clamps to hold stones together. Columns were made by standing shaped pieces of stone on top of each other. The stones were lifted into position with pulleys and fixed together — By MrGhaz at 2:49 AM Sun

I came across this stack of neato postcards while helping to clean out a deceased friend's house. They have been waiting a long time to make it through the mail. If you'd like one, PM me your address and I'll send it to you. They are from the 1920's & 30's (I think) onward. Some have descriptions on the back, some don't. You can try to specify if you like, but I make no guarantees -- I just want to help these cards fulfill their purpose. They've been waiting long enough. — By just sof at 11:31 PM Sat
