Waxahachie, Texas: "Art of the Secret Society" exhibit

 Art-Of-Secret-Society Images Masonicwall3 L
Art-Of-Secret-Society Images Masonicwall4 L I recently purchased a signed William S. Burroughs art print on eBay. Turns out, the seller, Bruce Webb, is a researcher, collector, and dealer of art and artifacts related to fraternal organizations and secret societies! He also has a gallery in Waxahachie, Texas, where Burroughs exhibited before he died. Webb has a deep interest in "old handmade items such as painted or repaired objects, fraternal lodge items, carnival banners, tramp art, memory jugs, quilts, and just killer oddball stuff." In fact, the current Webb Gallery show is "Art of the Secret Society," which runs until November 8. I love when a simple eBay purchase opens up a portal into another weird micro-universe of fascinating people and things.

Yep. Not aware of any Wacahachie, TX. Perhaps you meant Waxahachie?

Not to derail the comments before they really get started, but does anybody know what they're doing with the Supercollider tunnels apart from Wiki's "maybe a data center"?

Looks like a fun day trip. (Where the hell is Wacka-Watcha-Watsa-tusi anyways?) :)

In a similar artistic vein, and in the same state, no less, are these cheesecake sideshow banners by the artist Todd Sanders. They are pretty awesome.

He does all this custom neon signage, too, as you can see.

While you're there, be sure to see the Courthouse carvings that have a history of their own. Read more about it here: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/10855

Waxahachie is about 30 minutes south of Dallas. I lived there for 3 years and never knew about this gallery. I could see the courthouse from my apartment downtown.

that's Waxaha-chic!

Very interesting, even if you don't believe the Illuminati controls the world. Wish I lived close enough to go see it.

Awesome, we finally made the intertubes! I live in the town just north of Waxahachie (pronounced Woks-a-hatchie). Never knew this was there, but will go for a visit.

Great, show. i attending the opening and there are great handpainted banners, amazing carved staffs, and nice lithos.

I keep telling my wife that we need to go on a conspiracy road trip. We'd go up to Waco first to see the Branch Davidian compound (or at least, where it was; I understand there's just a sort of gift shop (!) there now), then to the JFK museum at the old schoolbook depository in Dallas, then the park where the federal building stood in Oklahoma City.

It'd be a decent weekend trip from here, but now, adding in a stop in Waxahachie...

The Webbs are incredibly interesting people and they throw great opening parties and the gallery is one of the coolest I have ever been in. It is completely worth the trip. Go there.

When I first went to Atlas Abscura I thought of Webb Gallery. Neato place. Stop by Chisolm Grill on the square when you visit, have the onion rings, thank me later.
